Why Do My Brows Look So Dark After Permanent Makeup? (And Why That's Completely Normal)

One of the most common questions I'm asked is, "Will my brows really be that dark?"

The simple answer is no – what you see immediately after your appointment isn't your final result.

Straight after your treatment, your brows will appear much darker and more defined than they will once they've healed. This is completely normal and is simply part of the healing process.

There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, the pigment sits very close to the surface of the skin immediately after treatment, making the colour appear stronger. Secondly, it's common to experience a little swelling and redness, which can make the brows look even more intense for the first couple of days.

Over the following week or two, your skin begins to heal. As this happens, the brows may become dry and flaky. This is another completely normal stage, and it's important not to pick or scratch the area, even if you're tempted. The tiny flakes will fall away naturally.

Many clients worry at this point because it can look as though the colour has disappeared altogether. Don't panic! The pigment is still there – it's simply hidden beneath a fresh layer of healing skin.

Over the next few weeks, the colour gradually returns and softens into a much more natural-looking result. In most cases, healed brows are around 30–50% softer and lighter than they appear on the day of treatment.

This is exactly why I always encourage my clients to trust the process. Permanent makeup isn't judged on day one—it's judged once it's fully healed.

Every person's skin heals slightly differently, which is why your six-week perfecting appointment is such an important part of the process. It gives us the opportunity to make any small adjustments and ensure your brows have healed beautifully.
